| Description: | William Arthur Goldsworthy (1878-1966) was born in England and moved to the USA in 1887.
He was a pupil of well-known Canadian/American organist, Samuel P. Warren, and served atseveral New York City churches. In addition, he played at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
The name of W. A. Goldsworthy is known to me, not through is music, but due to the fact that often "worked out" registrations for Hammon organs, which were often included in American publications.
"Arioso" was published by Carl Fischer Inc. in 1959. It is a rich and flowing tapestry, having to it an autumnal quality. At least that's how it struck me. :-)
The score is attached below.
I have no photos of W. A. Goldsworthy, but I did attach one of his teacher, Samuel P. Warren.
In addition I attached several photos of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, as well as some of the big 4-manual Möller it once housed. There is also a photo of Sigfrid Karg-Elert, which I believe is from the dedicatory recital.
I had always assumed that these "hotel organs" were largely versions of theater organs, with only a dozen or so ranks, extended in the manner of theater organs.
However this organ appears to be full cathedral styled instrument, complete with full choruses, numerous reeds, etc.
This instrument is installed in Montclair State College, Montclair, New Jersey. |
