Composer: Halsey, Ernest
Sample Producer: Lavender Audio
Sample Set: The Armley Schulze
Software: Hauptwerk IV
Genre: Early 20th century
Description:
Ernest Halsey was born in Battersea, London in April of 1876. He was Organist of Anerley Congregational Church, London, around 1903.

Halsey was also a stockbroker. He died at Marylebone, London on June 20th, 1939.

Today he is most remember for his fine "Toccata."

"Chant Joyeux" was published by the Vincent Music. Co. Ltd. in 1910. It is dedicated: "To Sidney Hann, Esq. A.R.A.M.

This is just a happy little piece, A-B-A in form, certain to bring a smile to the lips of virtually every listener.

There is already a fine performance uploaded, done by my esteemed collaborative partner, "Erzahler". Actually, it was Andrew who suggested that I take a try at this, and my performance is dedicated to him with friendship.

As I wrote in some of my other Halsey uploads: "I suppose you can't call Halsey a "real" or even "professional" composer, considering that music wasn't his "job." However, I always have found something of interest in his works, as I hope you will find in this one."

I still stand by this statement, as there is always something that brings pleasure to the listener in all of his works.

The score is attached below, as well as a drawing of Anerley Congregational Church in London, where Halsey was organist.

Over the next few days I hope to turn my attention to some American composers of the late 19th and early 20th century, so, expect some more of Harry Rowe Shelley, as well as works of Horatio Parker, and the like. :-)

I think it's a real shame that the younger generation, and even older generation of American organists tend to completely overlook and avoid these composers. To be sure, all of their works are not masterpieces, but there is a lot worth playing and hearing.
