Description: | R. D. Darrell says: Bach's "Pastorale" serves to bridge the apparent gulf between his largely introspective, devotional organ works and the extroverted, secular ones that are based on original themes for the most part. ONly the first movement of the work is a true 12/8 pastorale, but its tender grace and the calm poignance of the third movement in 3/8 meter are representative of the same expressive lyricism one finds in the chorale preludes, whereas the proud, more incisive second movement and the bravura finale are obviously showpieces. Probably dating from the Arnstadt period (1703-1707), it is the only example of its kind in the Bach organ repertory."
