Moritz Deutsch (1818–1892), a cantor/chazan, composer, and organist born in Moravia, studied synagogue music at the Vienna Conservatory. His teacher was the Austrian cantor and musician Salomon Sulzer, who is considered the most significant reformer of Jewish liturgy. Deutsch initially served as assistant cantor at the Vienna City Temple and then moved to Wroclaw, where he served as cantor at the New Synagogue until the end of his life. He also became known as an oratorio and art song singer.
His son Felix, an industry magnate, was one of the co-founders of AEG.
With his “Twelve Preludes for Organ or Pianoforte,” he masterfully blends old synagogue intonations with the classical and romantic musical forms of his time. In the preface to the 1864 edition, he explains for “the unfamiliar” that Nos. 1 and 2 are assigned to the Sabbath, Nos. 3 and 4 to Passover, while Nos. 5 and 6 are intended for Shavuot and Sukkot.
