Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750): Jesus, meine Zuversicht (Jesus, My Confidence), chorale prelude BWV 728 and chorale BWV 365 based on this Protestant hymn, which was published in 1653 in Johann Crüger's hymnal Praxis Pietatis Melica. The text was probably written by Otto Freiherr von Schwerin (1616-1679). Over the centuries, this Easter hymn was often played and sung at solemn state occasions as well as at funerals. With its simple melody and language, it conveys the confidence that faith overcomes the fear of death and encourages not to be ruled by fear, but to look joyfully toward the future and eternal life.
