Whitlock's biographer, Malcolm Riley, says in his preface to the Sonata, 'In the Scherzetto Whitlock surpasses himself: it is possibly the best extended light movement by an Englishman for the organ... It reflects Whitlock's own puckish sense of humour and his love of light music...'
This fine example of whimsical entertainment used to be on the list of options for the FRCO practical examination, possibly put there by Noel Rawsthorne who had a similar sense of humour!
