Description:
A.P.F. Boëly - 4 pieces from Vingt-Quatre Pièces Op. 12

0:00 Allegro Fugato
1:56 Dialogue de Hautbois et Cromorne
4:03 Duo de Cornet de Récit et Trompette du Positif
6:03 Grand Chœur

Here's a demo of the Souvigny sample set that was released a day or two ago. I knew this set was in the works for a while, and was a bit apprehensive when I learned that Jeux d'orgues was making the set, but after trying it, I have to say that I am enjoying it. Its not perfect but it is a big step up from Jeux d'orgues' previous entries. From a recording perspective, it sounds similar to the Lasceux recordings Mr. Perrot made in 2022 (Mr. Perrot was kind enough to mail me some of his CD's). Despite flaws with the sample set (no sampled tremulant, the releases need more work, etc.), I am happy with it so far.

The pieces I recorded here are the first four from A.P.F. Boëly's 24 pieces Op. 12, the first volume (pieces 1 - 10) of which I have an original copy of the first edition. I have scanned and uploaded it to IMSLP (I'm trying to locate someone who has Volume 2). These four pieces form a suite most likely intended for the Kyrie. Presumably the Plain-Chant pieces must be supplied by the organist (as is the case with Boëly's Op. 11), but otherwise the four pieces follow the usual forms for the Kyrie of the time, [Plain-chant], Fugue, Récit (Dialogue in this case, but in a similar character), Duo, and a Grand Chœur. There is a manuscript copy of the last piece in Versailles MS 169 (with some interesting variants, but I played the printed version here) which is dated 17 November 1832. At this time Boëly was good friends with J.N. Marrigues, organist of Saint-Gervais (also a Clicquot organ like Souvigny) and was a substitute organist there, all the pieces from Op. 12, while it is not certain that they all date from that time, they are intended for such an instrument.
