Description: | Using Llannerch Organs' Hauptwerk set of Blackburn Cathedral's wonderful Walker organ, I have recorded this piece and placed the stops I used in the video. I have also made available a pdf of the stop selections with some explanations (link below).
When written in 1934, both Alain and his fellow students Olivier Messiaen and Jean-Jacques Grünenwald were experimenting with unorthodox sounds and were not only influenced by a renewed enthusiasm for the Classical French Organ but also by the exposition of Eastern musical ensembles such as those appearing at the International Colonial Exhibition in Paris, 1931. Alain's early use of 'birdsong' as a symbolic part of the 'gardens of paradise' and his use of the 'Gros Nazard 5⅓' and 'Nazard 2⅔ seul' mirrored what 'risks' these young organists were taking in their improvisation classes with Marcel Dupré.
A part of the signed autograph manuscript 'Le jardin' was Alain's 'nota bene' which translates: 'It is absolutely necessary for the sound balance of this piece to have a soft Flute 4' (or Bourdon 4') that is able to blend with the Dulcianas. Unfortunately, only very few organs contain Dulcianas 8' and 4' and a stopped Gros Nazard. Failing Dulcianas, one may employ the Récit Gambe if the Swell box closes completely, and failing a soft Gambe, any sort of soft Salicional or Gemshorn. Failing a stopped Gros Nazard, one should use the Quintaton 8'. The counterpoint of triplets should not detract from the ensemble. Furthermore, do not be taken aback by the indication "only Nazard". It is indeed the third harmonic without the fundamental that is intended. Jehan Alain'
