Ballade en mode phrygien JA 9, AWV 8a, 1930

Dedicated to his mother (pour ma Grand Mère) who was a pianist, the score was intended for organ or piano, the pedal notes of the third section were given the direction, ‘Au piano rajouter cet accord et reprendre le debut jusqu'a fin’ (On the piano add this chord and repeat from its beginning to the end). The player is given the instruction to play with tones of grey or with a tinge of greyness(!) – ‘Dans les teintes grisailles’. Not sure that’s possible on the Blackburn organ with its brilliant range of colours…
