Elizabeth Stirling (1819-1895) was an English composer and organist. She received her musical education at the Royal Academy of Music and in Oxford, among others, but without a degree, as no such degrees were awarded to women at the time. She was organist in London at All Saints Church Poplar and St Andrews Undershaft.
Stirling was famous for her virtuoso pedal playing, which until then had mostly been reserved for male organists, but also for her sensational three-hour concert in which she performed 14 compositions, including 8 Bach works containing some of the most difficult fugues with pedal.
The Larghetto in G major hardly reflects the technical finesse of her playing; it is a simple, lovely piece of music, a small, melodic highlight that touches heart and soul. I recorded the piece off the cuff on the 2nd pass without much preparation.
