The four intermezzi by Stanford are contrasting pieces and the lovely "Hush-Song" is marked "Andante tranquillo" to call for peace and quiet, and lull a little one off to sleep. Nevertheless Stanford does not miss an opportunity for some of his characteristic harmonic twists and turns. He calls for a solo oboe, but I am drawn to the gorgeous Clarinet at Blackburn Cathedral, which contrasts with the lush strings to create a very special atmosphere indeed.
