ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF SELECT CHORALE VERSES:
1. O mankind, weep for your great sins,
Because of which Christ left his Father’s side
And came upon the earth;
From a young virgin pure and gentle
He was born here for us.
He wanted to become our mediator.
To the dead he gave life, and removed in this way all sickness
Until the time came when he would be sacrificed for us,
Bearing the heavy burden of our sins
for a long time on the cross,
17. When Jesus was hung on the cross,
they took his clothes and gave them away by casting lots.
Jesus' mother stood nearby with John at her side.
Jesus said to them: “This is your son, woman, accept him;
from now on this is your mother”;
John accepted her.
The high priests mocked him, they cried to him cruelly:
“Are you the one who comes from God?
18. If you are God’s dear Son,
then come down from the cross, and help yourself."
The thieves also spoke in this way.
But one of the two called out:
"This man here is innocent!
