Tom Mitchell (1947–2021) was born in Burch, Oklahoma and educated at Friends University, the University of Illinois, and the Oklahoma. From 1969–72, he served in the United States Air Force, where he was part of the USAF European Headquarters Band in Wiesbaden, Germany and as the leader of the Diplomats Combo that provided music in European embassies. Mitchell was director of music at various churches (including in Kansas, Illinois, Texas, and Tennessee) and held various positions as the director of choruses including as founding conductor of the Kansas Chorale, founding director of the Wichita Symphony Chorus, music director of the Nashville Symphony Chorus, and pops conductor of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. In 2008, after study at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Mitchell became an ordained minister and served as pastor and substance abuse counsellor for several years before retirement. His many musical compositions and arrangements were widely performed and published.
