What a find this was! I play only one piece of Andriessen, recommended many years ago by my teacher Keith Bond (Sub-Organist Blackburn Cathedral and tutor at the RNCM); the Theme and Variations which makes a very enjoyable voluntary/concert piece. This Passacaglia is atmospheric from the start with a haunting seven note theme which rises from the tonic and falls to the dominant. The variations contain a wealth of textures and use the full range of organ colours. The piece ends with a quite repeat of the opening, creeping to a restful close.
