Today’s work is the delightful Sonata in D Major by Portuguese composer João de Sousa Carvalho. Carvalho’s talent was recognised early, as he received a royal grant at age 15 to study at the Conservatory of Sant’Onofrio a Capuana in Naples. He returned to his home country afterwards and became the most successful Portuguese composer of his generation, and was best known for his works for his church and stage works.

It is unknown whether he wrote much for keyboard, and very little survives. Fortunately however, we do have this utterly delightful Sonata in D major, which comprises three movements filled to the brim with galant charm (Allegro - Larghetto - Allegro). When I first played this piece, I immediately thought of Fragonard’s famous painting, ‘The Swing’. With its flirtatious character, the swing-like alberti bass, and the playful dialogue between treble and bass, what else could this Sonata represent but a secret romance?
