German organist and composer Wolfgang Stockmeier (1931–2015) was born in Essen and educated in Cologne. From 1960, he taught organ, improvisation, theory, and church music on the faculty of the Musikhochschule in Cologne. Stockmeier was one of the most active German organ recitalists of his generation, playing nearly 3000 recitals and making about 150 recordings, including the complete music of Bach. As a composer, Stockmeier wrote more than 400 works in many genres including an opera, four oratorios, three symphonies, twelve organ sonatas, and numerous chamber, vocal, and choral pieces.
