Whenever I get depressed (yes, Christians can and do get depressed sometimes), I turn to the hymns of the Church – especially hymns in the evangelical tradition in which I was raised. There’s something about them – both in the music and in the words – that beautifully communicate the imminence (tender closeness) of God. I’ve been going through a difficult time lately and, as I sat down at the console at Bethany House, this beloved hymn just started flowing through my fingers. Please forgive any mistakes – I was playing it from memory…very much “in the moment”! :)
By the way, you’ll definitely want to use headphones – the sound of this pipe organ is amazing!! (Be sure to start the volume low.) The words for today’s hymn are below, in case you want to sing along! :)
“There’s a Sweet, Sweet Spirit in this Place”
Tune: Sweet Sweet Spirit
There’s a sweet, sweet spirit in this place;
and I know that it’s the spirit of the Lord.
There are sweet expressions on each face;
and I know that it’s the presence of the Lord.
Sweet Holy Spirit, sweet heavenly dove;
stay right here with us, filling us with your love.
And for these blessings we lift our hands in praise!
Without a doubt we’ll know that we have been revived
when we shall leave this place.
Amen.
