Description: | Charles Gounod (17 June 1818 – 17 or 18 October 1893) was famous for his many successful operas.
Like many French composers, he was an organist in his youth, and gave serious consideration to entering the priesthood.
Ernest Alfred Dicks (1865-1948) was an organist in Cheltenham, and also to the Royal Masonic Lodge. I'm not sure exactly where this work is taken from, but it was published by Bayley & Ferguson in 1913.
I've done quite a few pieces by Dicks, and some of them have proven to be quite and popular and well-received here on the Concert Hall.
This transcription is taken from Book 1 of the "Short and Easy Pieces." It's a fun piece, light-hearted and effective, and could be a good wedding march or the postlude for a lettuce grower's convention. :-)
The score (entire Book 1) is attached below, with the "Marche Romaine" beginning on page 44. Also attached is a photo of Charles Gounod. |
