Woodland Sketches, Op. 51 wqas written in 1896 and is MacDowell's most famous composition. It consists of ten miniature pieces, written for piano, which seem inspired by the woodland setting of the MacDowell family farm in Peterborough, New Hampshire. The farm later became the site of the MacDowell Colony.
