Buxtehude wrote most of his Choral Preludes for 2 manuals and pedal. The format is usually limited to a concentrated setting of only one stanza.
Coluratura treatments are very frequent and make Buxtehude's style a personal one. The interludes seperate the various phrases. With the melody in the right hand the accompanying parts make a lot of use of Vorimitation.
The chorale settings of Buxtehude are warm, full of expression and full of flights of imagination inspired by the words of the chorale and the melody itself.
