| Description: | "Lullaby for a Royal Prince" is a charming, reflective instrumental piece composed in 1982
written entirely on Arthur’s own initiative as a spontaneous, unofficial musical tribute to celebrate the birth of Prince William in June 1982. Rather than a formal commission, the piece was a personal expression of celebration. It was originally published by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM). Because it was composed quickly in the immediate aftermath of the royal birth, the original score did not carry a formal printed dedication, though its sub-title and musical intent clearly marked the occasion. The RSCM took on the piece to provide church organists with a topical, accessible voluntary.
The work was uniquely crafted for flexibility, designated for performance on either organ manuals or piano. Wills even provided an alternative ending specifically tailored for the piano's natural decay.
Rather than overwhelming the listener with power, the work builds its appeal entirely on quiet restraint. It stands out in Wills' repertoire as a beautifully straightforward, poetic cameo that brings a peaceful, reflective moment to any recital programme.
I have looked beyond my usual partners in this project & settled on the fabulous organ of the Stiftskirche Stuttgart. |
