The composer writes: “'The Mystery of the Seven Stars'” is a composition for solo organ that extensively employs aleatoric techniques. The title refers to a passage from the first chapter of the Book of Revelation. Imagery drawn from the biblical text is used in the score as verbal notation, often in place of traditional tempo or expressive designations. The approach I took to this composition musically reflects perspectives on the literary structure of the Book of Revelation, where, via a series of reiterative cycles of imagery, the non-linear narrative describes several eschatological scenarios from a variety of perspectives/vantage points. The seven stars referenced in the title are symbolized by a seven-pitch set, which is heard both unaccompanied and worked into the texture in various ways, depending on the interpretation of the performer.
