Description:
Here is my current take on the most infamous organ piece in the world, which is very different than how I've played this piece in the past. In this version, I combine my knowledge of the scholarship regarding Bach's works and how they "should" be played with the "obsolete" suggestions for performance given by Widor and Schweitzer in their edition. Albert Schweizer's recording was also referenced for ideas and inspiration.
(This is being done for philosophical reasons that I explain during my recital in a few weeks.)

In short, I neither wax rhapsodic, as Widor and Schweizer caution against, nor keep just one grand tempo for everything presto and adagio, as the two advocate for. You can hear the merging of styles in this performance: modest legato at times, with purposeful phrasing, alongside more articulated sections; manual changes for sure, but not so many as Widor and Schweizer suggest; yet still drawing attention to those sections through articulation differences when I do not change keyboards; and the registration instructions were followed rather closely when possible, (there is no swell pedal to use as they instruct one to do).

I think the piece sounds really great on this sample set with the prescribed registrations. I hope you'll find this unique approach informative, interesting, and inspiring.

(Recording note: there are a couple of glitches. One in the toccata on a sustained chord that I don't find bothersome, but another around the 6:21 mark in the fugue which frustrates me. My engineering skills aren't good enough to remove them. I'm working my way through the Glitch Free by Brad Robinson to fine tune Windows, so hopefully future lengthy recordings won't have them. I always just re-record shorter pieces when it's done that, but something like this is a lot more work. Please forgive.)
