Sample Set: Schuke (1977), Erfurt, Predigerkirche
Software: Hauptwerk VII
Genre: Romantic
Description:
This stunning work by George J. Bennett encompasses tremendous of breadth of emotion and scale. I recently heard it, was reminded that I had intended to learn it, and set myself the challenge of realizing it on the new Predigerkirche sampleset from Piotr Grabowski - I am rather happy with how it turned out.

I must thank Agnus_Dei for introducing us to this amazing work, and do check out his upload for a link to the score, additional background information, and his fine performance!

"Elegiac Prelude," published by Novello in 1920, is presumably in memory of the composer's wife, Marion. This intensely emotional work builds through several climaxes but always maintains a tone of deep sadness and loss - at one point we feel the work has ended, only to transition to a serene and peaceful coda which conjures hope and release!

George John Bennett, Mus.Doc. (5 May 1863 –1930) was an English cathedral organist and composer, who served in Lincoln Cathedral from 1895. He was born on 5 May 1863 in Andover, Hampshire. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music under G.A. Macfarren and C. Steggall, and also abroad, in Berlin under H. Barth (piano) and F. Kiel (composition) as well as in Munich (1885-1887) under H. Bussmeyer (piano) and Josef Rheinberger (composition).
