Coro "Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu Dir" BWV 38 Nr 1

Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir, BWV 38, is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He composed the chorale cantata in Leipzig in 1724 for the 21st Sunday after Trinity and performed it for the first time on 29 October 1724. The cantata's text and melody are based on the hymn Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (I cry to you from deep distress), in which Martin Luther adapted Psalm 130.

Bach composed the cantata in Leipzig in 1724 as part of his second cycle of cantatas for all occasions of the church year, which he planned as a cycle of choral cantatas based on the songs assigned to the occasions by the Lutheran church. He began the cycle with the first Sunday after Trinity and wrote this cantata for the 21st Sunday after Trinity.

The cantata is based on the text and melody of Luther's penitential hymn "Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir" (I cry to you from deep distress), a rephrasing of Psalm 130. It was a main hymn for Sunday in Bach's time. The text of the first and last verses of the song is unchanged and was arranged by Bach as usual as an opening chorale fantasia and four-part final chorus.

We hear the first movement, a chorale arrangement, in which Bach performs the eternal balancing act between church key and melodic minor. In the very first bar, I made an F sharp out of the F in the pedal, and thus messed up Bach's own handiwork - the great master may forgive me, but the "F" made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up ......
No sample fits as well as the one from the Eisenbarth organ in Friesach with the strong reeds. I did without the 32" Untersatz and the 16" Posaune, because that would obscure the beauty of the voice leading.
