John Cage has written some exceptional pieces which really challenge the listener. One piece that I really enjoyed when visiting the German town of Halberstadt last year was his "ORGAN²/ASLSP" that is currently performed in the church of St. Burchardi. As the changing sound when walking through the church is one of the features of this performance a recording with a virtual organ would not even come close to that - unless Hauptwerk VI brings us a feature that allows organist and visitors alike to walk through the church while the virtual organ plays.
So instead I decided instead to record the famous 4'33". The organ arrangement was done very quickly, however practising took me some time.
The piece consists of three movements, I decided to play the first movement with a nice foundation of 8' stops, the second movement only with very soft stops to prepare for the last movement played with all stops out.
So, please enjoy 4'33" by John Cage in a version for organ.
P.S.: For obvious reasons I have not uploaded a MIDI file. I also can't give any information regarding the exact registration because part of the fun is finding your own one, especially for a piece like this.
P.P.S.: When my page-turner has time I am going to record John Cage's "In a landscape". A piece that is much more challenging than 4'33, but also has many more notes to play - and sounds really beautiful in a church or other room with a long reverb.
