Composer: Sir W G Alcock
Sample Producer: Lavender Audio
Sample Set: Hereford Cathedral Willis Organ
Software: Hauptwerk IV
Genre: Modern
Description:
The Introduction and Passacaglia by Sir Walter Galpin Alcock (for many years organist of Salisbury cathedral) was clearly inspired by Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue, while being in Alcock's own style. It was written for the Three Choirs Festival at Hereford in 1933. Alcock is said on the day of the first performance of this piece to have heard a piece called Ostinato by Herbert Sumsion (organist of Gloucester cathedral, and from whom I benefited from piano lessons many years later) and as a result scrapped his first version and in a single day wrote an entirely new one which is the piece we now have. It is nice to play this on the organ for which it was orginally written. The tuba is quite prominent!
