American composer Ronald Perera (1941–2023) was a native of Boston and was educated at Harvard University and the University of Utrecht. His catalog of compositions includes operas, song cycles, chamber, choral, orchestral works, and several compositions with electronic tape. He maintained a particular focus on music with text and set the words of many noted authors, both living and dead. Perera received awards and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, ASCAP, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Artists Foundation of Massachusetts, Harvard University, MacDowell, the Paderewski Fund, the Bogliasco Foundation, and Meet the Composer. Perera served on the faculty of Syracuse University, Dartmouth College, and finally Smith College, where he taught from 1971 until his retirement in 2002. |
