Manuel Rodrigues Coelho (c. 1555–1635) was a Portugese composer and organist who held posts at Elvas Cathedral and from 1602–1633 served as the king’s chaplain and court organist in Lisbon. In 1620, he published a single collection of music for keyboard, voices, and harp, the earliest surviving keyboard music published in Portugal. The noted scholar of Spanish and Portugese baroque music Barton Hudson has noted that Rodrigues Coelho’s style “stems from that of Cabezón but is also indebted to Sweelinck and the English virginalists, who could have been known in Lisbon through residents such as Rinaldo del Mel and the elder Francis Tregian.”
