October was very much devoted to the Prelude and Fugue in D major, Op. 13 No. 5.
The whole piece is inspired by the beginning of autumn and by the beautiful German autumn song “Bunt sind schon die Wälder”. A.I. gave me the idea of using this melody, and I was very happy to follow the suggestion.
The result is a Prelude in the style of a French Overture. The powerful reed stops of the beautiful Noeske organ in Kassel-Niederzwehren sound out their fanfares like horns. As a contrast, a lively melody in 6/8 appears, and many listeners may recognise it at once: “Bunt sind schon die Wälder”. It makes quite a contrast to the strong and festive fanfares.
And just as lively as this autumn song is our new little housemate, who has now been part of our small family for one week. Her name is Kalina, a lively young dog from Bulgaria. After 27 years of always having dogs around us, and after our Penny sadly died in August at the age of more than 14, my wife and I found the house far too quiet.
Now there are three of us again, and we are very busy bringing up our little rascal. She also seems to be quite musical. When I improvise on my Kurzweil PC88 — and, to my ears, there are now many more quiet passages than before — she eventually settles down and gives us a little time to relax.
Back to the music: after the six-and-a-half-minute Prelude in A-B-A form, a four-part Fugue in 6/8 follows.
