| Description: | Chorale Prelude No. 9, "Ach Gott, erhör mein Seufzen und Wehklagen", is a deeply expressive movement from Eleven Chorale Preludes for Organ by British composer and organist Dr Christopher Maxim (b. 1971). Published by Paraclete Press in 2019, the collection was written as a direct 21st-century homage to Johannes Brahms’s final masterpiece, the Eleven Chorale Preludes, Op. 122.
Maxim—a Cardiff University PhD graduate, specialist in historical keyboard music, and former Director of Music at St Matthew’s, Bethnal Green—infuses his deep knowledge of early counterpoint into a fresh, contemporary voice.
While the early pieces in the collection span joyful liturgical seasons, the later numbers turn inward to handle themes of human grief and mortality. Mirroring the 17th-century hymn text ("Give ear, O Lord, and mark my sore complaining"), No. 9 embeds the title's "sighs" (Seufzen) and "laments" (Wehklagen) into dense, highly chromatic counterpoint. The traditional melody is held in strict structural focus, but it is wrapped in intense harmonic suspensions and expressive linear friction, resulting in a brief, poignant meditation on vulnerability and faith.
As my experience of this type of instrument is rather limited I did some background reading about registration and have adopted one set down by the great Karl Straube.
I believe that this piece allows a perfect demonstration of some of the the delicious colours of this Sauer organ. Look out for a few more of these Maxim chorale preludes
