Gerardus Scronx: Echo in G Major — Two Centuries, Two Ears

What happens when the same music passes through two very different historical ways of listening?

Gerardus Scronx was a 17th-century monk and organist from Liège whose surviving keyboard music belongs to the musical world of the Catholic Lower Netherlands. His Echo in G Major provides the specimen for this experiment.

The first performance places the piece in an early Baroque sound world, using the Solignac organ and the registration practices associated with France and the Catholic Netherlands. Here the echo is treated primarily as a change of color: contrasting sonorities articulate the structure without requiring a later Romantic conception of expressive dynamics.

The second performance asks a different question. How might the same notes have been heard through the ears of Alexandre Guilmant, editor of this collection, more than two centuries later?

Guilmant was deeply engaged with early organ music, but he necessarily encountered it through the instruments, aesthetics, and historical understanding of his own time. On the Cavaillé-Coll organ at Caen, the same Echo becomes something different: broader in sonority, more dynamically shaped, and heard through a Romantic conception of organ color and expression.

The composition remains constant. Historical listening does not.

The point is not to determine which performance is “correct,” but to hear how changing historical assumptions can reveal different possibilities already latent in the same notes.
