I uploaded this short prelude on the chorale 'Nun Ruhen alle Walder' last year, but unfortunatly it got deleted in the website 'update' fiasco.
So I made a new recording to replace it.
The origins of the chorale tune are interesting. It was originally composed by the Dutch composer Heinrich Isaac (ca. 1450 – 26 March 1517) for a popular secular song 'Innsbruck ich muss dich lassen' or 'Innsbruck I must leave you.'
At the Reformation, Martin Luther said that the Devil should not be allowed to have the best tunes, and in keeping with this philosophy the tune was taken, and used for a number of German chorales. It became a favourite of J S Bach who used it many times in various cantatas, not least his monumental Saint John Passion.
Here it is set for a prelude to Gerhardt's evening hymn, 'Nun ruhen alle Walder', or 'Now all the woods rest,' made singable in English by Robert Bridges, as 'The dutious day now closeth.'
I recorded this on the Kreszow Abbey organ by Michael Engler via Hauptwerk.
