| Description: | Karl Karow (1790–1863) was a German composer, arranger and schoolmaster.
Karow was born as the son of a merchant and received a comprehensive education, which included violin and piano lessons. Later, he studied organ and harmony under music director Friedrich Wilhelm Haack.
In 1818, he was appointed senior music teacher at the teacher training college in Bunzlau.
As a composer, he created numerous choral works, psalms, motets, proverbs, and songs. Several of his chorale preludes for organ were included in various collections.
His chorale prelude to the Easter hymn "Christ ist erstanden", marked "Maestoso" with the registration instruction "full organ", quotes the hymn melody in the first two bars. In the tenth bar, the hymn theme is quoted again (this time transposed to C major), the rest is a free composition. |
