343 years ago today (unbelievable, it's been that long...), on January 14, 1683, organ builder Gottfried Silbermann was born. So what could be more fitting than to dedicate a little recording on a Silbermann organ to this day?
This Prelude and Fugue in G major by Bach's student Johann Schneider (1702-1788) comprises two contrasting parts. While the prelude is close to the galant style, the lively baroque fugue seems to be inspired by various works of J.S. Bach, to the extent that at the end a few bars from BWV 545 are incorporated note for note. Pure coincidence, but my last recording was a collage of fragments from Bach's works... (“Bach's Mashup - BWV 545 meets 553 and 531”).
