John Bennett (1735-1784) was an English composer who served as organist at St. Dionis Backchurch (London). He also worked as a church musician, teacher, and harpsichordist, similar to his near-contemporaries John Stanley and William Boyce.
His most well-known compositions are the Ten Voluntaries (published 1780), which typically follow the English style of an opening slow introduction, a contrasting solo stop movement, and a lively fugue or trumpet-like concluding movement that displayed Bennett's contrapuntal expertise.
This recording is from the opening Adagio of Voluntary No. VI.
