Description: | Gustav Adolf Merkel (1827-1885) was a German organist, composer and music teacher. He worked all his life in Dresden, where he became organist at the Kreuzkirche and later at the Hofkirche. He was known as a virtuoso organist. His organ compositions were among the most frequently played works in the second half of the 19th century.
This organ sonata is one of the most important in his sonata oeuvre. The fact that the composer is a representative of the German Bach school can be recognized in the final fugue. But he was open for contemporary trends as is clear from the other movements.
