Augsburg 1754
No information has survived about Johann Caspar Simon's youth and early education. He studied at the University of Jena from 1723; according to music historians, he may have been a pupil of Johann Nicolaus Bach, a cousin of Johann Sebastian Bach, during this time. In 1727, Simon took up the post of clergyman and director musices at the town church in Langenburg (Württemberg), where he also worked as praeceptor (teacher at the Latin school). Just four years later, in August 1731, he moved to St. George's Church in Nördlingen as Protestant music director. Here he developed a lively activity as a composer and also became praeceptor at the Latin school there in 1743. After inheriting his deceased brother-in-law's cloth business in Leipzig in 1750, Simon left his musical activities in Nördlingen, built up a new livelihood as a merchant here, dedicated himself to his second career and achieved the rank of Commerzienrath.
