Johann Philipp Kirnberger was born on April 24, 1721 in Saalfeld/Saale. He received violin and piano lessons from an early age, followed by general musical training with Johann Peter Kellner and Bach's pupil Heinrich Nikolaus Gerber. From 1741-51, he worked in various positions as a harpsichordist, bandmaster and music teacher in Poland, after which he returned to Germany to take violin lessons, followed by a position as a violinist in the Prussian court orchestra in Potsdam. In 1758, his broad interests and diverse abilities were crowned with an appointment as court musician, teacher, bandmaster, composer and musical advisor to Princess Anna Amalia at the court in Berlin, a position he held until his death on 27 July 1783.
