Gronau's origins and education are obscure. His date of birth is also doubtful. From 1717 he is documented as an organist in Danzig. Here he worked on the small organ in St. Anne's Chapel from 1717 to 1719, on the small organ in St. Catherine's Church from 1719 to 1724, on the choir organ in St. Mary's Church from 1724 to 1730 and on the large organ in St. John's Church from 1730 until his death.
Gronau composed songs, preludes and more than 500 fugues in the style of the North German organ school. His chorale variations are an important source for organ playing in the 18th century due to their extensive registration instructions. The manuscript, two volumes of chorale variations covering around 100 chorales, had been considered lost since 1945 until a microfilm made in 1981 was discovered in the Newberry Library in 2012, making a complete edition possible for the first time.
These variations on the Easter and Ascension hymns show his creative way of arranging the chorale.
