The Trio Sonata No. 1 in E flat major BWV 525 consists, like all the others in this collection, of three movements, with the characteristic succession of Allegro-Adagio-Allegro. The setting is clearly of a concert type, but is dominated by a principle of dialogue between the two melodic voices.
Allegro (1st movement): The theme is presented by the left hand (alto), then the response comes from the right hand (soprano). Once the exposition of the first part has been completed, which ends at the initial tonality (tonic), the development takes place, during which the theme, appearing several times even reversed (by contrary motion), leads to the tone of the dominant.
Here a counterexposition begins with the order of the parts reversed. The theme is reprized in B flat major followed by the response in E flat. They are followed by a second development which gradually leads to a brief reprise of the theme on the pedal and then to the conclusion of the first movement.
