When I Lost You with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. Organ Arrangement by Jelani Eddington. Play by Norm Bailey on the George Wright Tribute VTPO.
It was written in 1912 after his wife of five months, the former Dorothy Goetz, died of typhoid fever. In it he poured out the grief of his loss; it was the only song that he ever admitted had such a connection to his own life. The song is in a slow waltz tempo. It became Berlin's first hit ballad.
The song is unusual in that as a sad song it has been written in a major key instead of a minor key.
This organ Arrangement by Jelani Eddington accents the major key by making key changes down instead of up to make it sound sadder except for one that goes up lasts for a bar before changing key downwards again. It features 2nd touch melody in the left hand which is challenging to play without a 2nd touch keyboard, using initial touch to trigger the 2nd touch and playing lightly at the same time for the accompaniment.

[Verse]
I lost the sunshine and roses
I lost the heavens of blue
I lost the beautiful rainbow
I lost the morning dew
I lost the angel who gave me summer
The whole winter through
I lost the gladness that turned into sadness
When I lost you
[Outro]
And I lost the angel who gave me summer
The whole winter through
I lost the gladness that turned into sadness
When I lost you
