Sample Producer: Sonus Paradisi
Sample Set: Prib Chamber Organ 2007
Software: Hauptwerk V
Genre: Baroque
Description:
Maurice Greene (1696-1755),
Voluntary X in d-minor:
1. Largo
2. Andante (Fugue)

This is the second time that I have uploaded this piece, but this time using a sample set closer to the sound of the Adcock & Pether bureau organ (London, 1760), on which I performed this piece for the annual meeting of the Historical Keyboard Society of North America in June, 2024, at Colonial Williamsburg, VA. That lovely antique instrument, located in the Governor's Palace at CW, is designed to look like a desk/bureau until you open it up. As it has no electrified wind supply, an assistant had to pump the bellows so that I could play.

Quite frankly, my eyes are blurry and nearly crossing after playing this from a facsimile of the original publication of Maurice Greene's "12 Voluntarys for the Organ or Harpsichord." Although everything is printed fairly clearly there, quite a lot of the notes are not vertically aligned with the other notes in their respective measure, making sight reading a tricky matter.

Those of you who are familiar with this piece may notice that I don't always play the same accidentals that you might be accustomed to hear or play. In some instances, that is because the typesetter seems to have omitted some accidentals that normally would be expected--so I added what I judged to be needed. Also, there seems to be some confusion as to who the rightful composer of these voluntaries may be, because there is an edition by Peter Williams (Galaxy Music) that presents the very same music but from a manuscript attributed to William Boyce--which, though essentially identical to Greene's publication (ca. 1779), has some differences of opinion about certain accidentals of this very chromatic keyboard work. In other words, I made my own "executive decisions" about the accidentals, based selectively upon what I found in more than one source.
