Description: | J.N. Marrigues - Fugato
On the sample set after St-Maximin.
The manner of playing a post-classical fugue: Often, the post-classical music was published in the "easy version", one could say, for commercial reasons (mainly the less skilled organists of the provinces). Other times the manuscripts that have come down to us were intended for private usage, therefore they were written for generally smaller instruments, and often contained abbreviated notation that the organist would fill in on the spot. This Fugato by Marrigues displays some of these aspects: missing or reduced voices, missing indications for the pedals and manuals. The post-classical organists often would, in their fugues, "bring out" (sortir) a voice on another manual, this process is only found in the works of Gervais-François Couperin (written for a small two manual instrument), but undoubtedly all the great organists of the time, who always played their music to the greatest effect, would have employed such a spectacular process. The end result is quite interesting, especially with a large instrument possessing a "clavier de Bombarde". |
