Flemish composer Peter Leys (b. 1958) was born in Ghent (Belgium) and studied philology and history at Ghent University. He taught history and held various leadership positions at the Don Bosco Institute (formerly the Maria Mazzarello Institute) in Groot-Bijgaarden from 1981 until his retirement in 2019. Leys is the grandson of the Flemish composer Jef Tinel (1885–1972) and has been involved in the continued editing and promotion of Tinel’s music. Leys has also been active himself as a choral director and composer.
