Georges Debat-Ponsan, born in 1855, studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he was a pupil of François Benoist and Ambroise Thomas.
Debat-Ponsan was organist of Notre-Dame de la Daurade in Toulouse and a professor at the conservatory of this city, where he died in 1933.
His perhaps better know brother was Édouard Debat-Ponsan (25 April 1847 – 29 January 1913). A French academic painter noted for his allegorical works, scenes of peasant life and Orientalist works.

Debat-Ponsan was born in Toulouse. His younger brother was organist and composer Georges Debat-Ponsan, best known for his organ work Scherzo Symphonique.
