This is the first chorale prelude that we know of by Reger, composed slightly earlier than `Komm süßer Tod' that I posted earlier. Reger studied at the conservatory in Wiesbaden at the time. The melody version of the cantus firmus can be found in the 'Melodien mit bezifferten Bässen' from the 'Anleitung zum Generalbaß-Spielen' by his teacher Hugo Riemann. Bach's `Aus tiefer Not schrei' ich zu dir' BWV 686 may have served as an example for the six-part structure with the cantus firmus in the right foot of the double pedal. Each line, except the final one, is followed by an imitation in diminution in the soprano part.
This is a chorale for Good Friday, I'm a bit early, but at least Lent has started.
