Gigout was born in Nancy. He studied in Paris with Saint-Saëns and Clément Loret at Ecole Niedermeyer, where he became a teacher when he was 20 years old. In 1911 he succeeded Alexandre Guilmant at Paris Conservatoire. He was a renowned teacher and his pupils include André Marchal, André Fleury, Maurice Duruflé...
He had married Niedermeyer's daughter, and later they adopted their nephew Léon Boëllmann.
