| Description: | Michael Calabris (b. 1984) — An Orchid Among Daffodils (2023) for organ
Carson Cooman, organ
The composer writes: “The title of this composition is barrowed from words written about Margaretha Zelle—better known by her later stage name, Mata Hari (1876–1917)—by a friend and classmate, around the time they both finished their high school studies. Even at a young age, Margaretha‘s beauty and sense of destiny made her stand out from the other students. Her friend wrote that Margaretha’s presence among the other girls at school was said to be akin to that of ‘an orchid among daffodils.’ In many ways, this piece is an impressionistic take on that sentiment.”
Michael Calabris (b. 1984) is an American composer based in Northeast Ohio. His compositions include electronic/computer-realized works, scores for Silent Era films, podcast music, compositions for solo instruments, and liturgical and chamber works. (michaelcalabriscomposer.com)
