‘Dignity and Impudence’ is a painting of two dogs by Landseer and may have inspired Percy Whitlock’s March from 1932. However it is clear that Whitlock was strongly influenced by Elgar’s Pomp & Circumstance marches. The piece, originally for orchestra, follows the traditional form and the big tune is one of the finest written by any British composer.
